Algorithms
You can now rank first on Google and still lose traffic.
That is genuinely new, and it is the most useful thing to understand about search right now.
Ahrefs looked at 300,000 keywords and found that when Google shows an AI Overview at the top of the page, click-through rate for the number one organic result drops by around 34.5%.
Pew Research watched nearly 69,000 real searches and found people clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% when it did not.
Roughly half the clicks, from the same position.
So rankings and traffic have quietly become two separate things that need watching separately. If your Search Console shows impressions holding steady while clicks fall, you have not been demoted. You have been summarised.
The interesting part is the other side of it.
Brands that get cited inside those AI answers see click-through go up substantially. The goal has shifted from being the top result to being the source Google decides to quote.
Those require different work.
