Does Meta Matta?
And I’m specifically talking about the glasses. The Rayban and Oakley ones you may have read about recently.
WAY back in 2025, I won a pair in raffle. Result! I thought to myself.
I wore them out on hikes with the dog, out running, on the paddleboard and – more recently – while hiking up Mt Vesuvius.
It meant I didn’t have to get my phone out to take pics, I could hear my WhatsApp’s read out and could listen to audiobooks, podcasts and music without clogging up my lugs with earphones. All the time wearing a comfortable and protective pair of shades. And content creation? Brilliant! Means I don’t have to strap a go-pro to my head for POV content.
Then everyone said they were only for perverts or rage baiters.
I – dear reader – am neither. Honest. But that’s what a perv or a bully would say, isn’t it?
For those of you who don’t know much about them, they have built in speakers and cameras – you can take a snap or a short vid with a click of a button. Genius. A little LED light comes on so everyone knows what you’re doing.
Well, some bright sparks have managed to hack them and disable the light. So now they can video whoever and whatever they want, unbeknownst to the victim.
Huge campaigns have been launched. Perv specs being the general theme.
And the content you capture? Yeah, it syncs to your phone and no, Zuckerberg says that’s where it stays.
Alas, my dear reader, it does not.
It goes up to that there cloud. Where it’s stored.
People working in these data centres have confirmed that they’ve seen videos of fighting, people in pants and more. Use your imagination.
So where does that leave me?
I’ve got a cracking pair of rayban wayfarers that do exactly what I want them to do. Innocently. But I now fear that wearing them will leave me all manner of things that I’m not.
So they’re neatly gathering dust in my cupboard while I wear my other, not as good sunglasses for fear of kickback.
The answer? I don’t know.
