Video Content Strategy:
Why Text and Images Aren’t Enough Anymore

Video isn’t the future of marketing. It’s the present.

And if you’re still thinking of it as optional, you’re competing with one hand behind your back.

Here’s what the data shows: video content gets 1200% more shares than text and images combined. Video pages rank higher in Google. People retain 95% of information from a video versus 10% from reading text. Video ads have a higher conversion rate than any other ad format.

But before you rush off to produce Hollywood-quality videos, understand this: you don’t need to be slick. You need to be authentic.

The best performing video content we’ve seen comes from small businesses showing what they actually do. A behind-the-scenes video of your team working is more effective than a scripted, produced ad. A founder talking directly to the camera about a problem they solve beats a professional voiceover every time.

That’s because people connect with people, not with production value.

Video strategy starts with purpose. Are you trying to educate? Entertain? Build trust? Drive a sale? Each of those requires different video content.

An educational video might be a short tutorial or a how-to. An entertainment video might be a funny skit or a trend. A trust-building video might be customer testimonials or a tour of your space. A sales video might be a product demo or a direct pitch.

The key is that each serves a specific purpose in your marketing. You’re not just making videos for the sake of it.

Distribution is just as important as creation. You could make the best video ever and get zero views if nobody knows it exists. Most businesses don’t have a distribution strategy. They post a video once and move on.

Instead, you should be thinking about how to get that video in front of the right people. Is it going on YouTube? Your website? TikTok? Instagram Reels? LinkedIn? Each platform requires slightly different formats and lengths.

A two-minute YouTube video works. A 30-second Instagram Reel works. A TikTok trend that’s 15 seconds works. A LinkedIn thought leadership video that’s three minutes works. They’re all different, but they can come from the same source material. Shoot once, distribute multiple times to multiple platforms.

Where small businesses usually fumble is with inconsistency.

They make a video when they remember to. They post it once. They move on. Then they wonder why video isn’t working for them.

Video strategy requires consistency, just like any other content channel. You should have a plan for how often you’ll publish. Where you’ll publish. What kind of videos you’ll make. Then stick to it long enough to see results.

Most channels need 90 days before the algorithm starts working in your favour.

Video is no exception. If you’re going to do this, commit to it for at least three months before you judge whether it’s working.

The good news is that video production has become incredibly accessible. You can shoot professional-looking content on your phone. You can edit it with free software. You don’t need a budget of thousands to get started.

What you need is a strategy, consistency, and authentic content that serves a purpose.

Start with one video this month. Make it about something you actually know well. No script, just talk to the camera. Post it on the platform where your customers hang out. Then do it again next month.

By the end of the year, you’ll have twelve videos. By year two, you’ll have momentum. And by year three, you’ll be wondering why you didn’t start sooner.
